Join us for this member-only tour at the A.D. German Warehouse in Richland Center, WI. We will have refreshments including a complimentary drink ticket from the Madison Trust for beverage of your choice. Enjoy catching up with your fellow members in this amazing Frank Lloyd Wright building!

This four-story structure rises from a concrete base with a red brick exterior crowned by an intricate frieze of gray concrete. A grid of massive, steel-reinforced concrete columns with flaring capitals carry the weight of the floors and roof. The insulating effect of the double brick wall construction created a cold storage environment for this warehouse before mechanical refrigeration. In 2014, after two years of combined local and national preservation efforts, local philanthropists purchased the structure for restoration and rehabilitation. Meaningful restoration began in 2020 and by 2024 the “envelope was sealed” allowing for development inside the building. Today, the first floor contains a lounge which is open to the public every Friday night, serving beer, wine, non-alcoholic beverages and snacks. The next phase of rehabilitation, which is being undertaken with the help of a team of architects, developers, contractors and other outside consultants, includes elevator upgrades, HVAC, a caterers kitchen and a beer garden.

This tour for Madison Trust members will include a short video which provides historical context and will be followed by a walking tour guided by docents who are knowledgeable about specific design elements and efforts to restore the building. Docents are happy to delve deeper into topics of interest to each group.

*We realize that this location is outside of Madison, but we hope you’ll consider coming out to Richland Center to learn more about the history of this building. We also plan to provide you with suggestions for lunch and a short historical driving tour. Spend the day in Richland Center!

Tours will run every 15 minutes starting at 1:00 p.m.. When you register, you will be able to choose your tour time. The tour is approximately one hour. Refreshments will be available after your tour.

There is limited space at this event so we encourage you to register early! Event information will be sent after you register. Members must provide their six-digit Member ID to register. Maximum of 2 tickets per member so that we are able to include as many members as possible.

Important information:

ACCESSIBILITY

The gift shop and the tour itself do not have wheelchair accessibility. The tour includes stairs and elevators are not available for either building (Warehouse and The 1912). The building does not have heat or air conditioning.

A portion of the stairs during the tour are somewhat steep. The first floor is accessible by a ramp, but the upper floors are only accessible by the stairs.
