A proposed ten-story structure between two Madison Landmarks, the Milwaukee Road Depot and the Wiedenbeck-Dobelin Warehouse, threatens to isolate the Warehouse and further transform the rail corridors that once defined West Washington Avenue.

The short façade of the Wiedenbeck-Dobelin Warehouse (now Wiedenbeck Apartments) along what would be Mifflin Street.

The perpendicular leg of the Warehouse, now used for residential purposes. The single-story leg that parallels West Washington Avenue is not shown.

On July 1, the Landmarks Commission heard an informational presentation regarding another large project in the West Washington Avenue rail corridor. The Trinitas Ventures redevelopment would reconfigure lots so as to corral the Wiedenbeck-Dobelin Warehouse at 619 West Mifflin Street, which was designated a local landmark in 1989.[1] The two legs of the L-shaped Wiedenbeck-Dobelin Warehouse building sit along the northeast and southeast lines of its lot.

The southwest side of the new building proposed by Trinitas would also be adjacent to a second local landmark, the Milwaukee Road Depot.

The developer’s schedule is to file a formal application with the City on August 12, make an informational presentation to the Urban Design Commission on August 28, and then have the matter placed on the Landmarks Commission agenda for its meeting on September 9.

The Madison Trust Board recently took a position, largely articulated by John Rolling, opposing the Trinitas proposal to effectively “fence-in” the Warehouse to a lot that follows the perimeter of the one and two-story landmarked building. The Madison Trust’s position is set forth in the following letter, signed by President Rick Chandler, to the Commissioners of the Landmarks Commission.
