Unfortunately, it is not unusual for an applicant to propose the demolition of a historically significant or architecturally noteworthy structure as part of an effort to build one or more new buildings in Madison. As any demolition proposal moves through the city’s review process, there may be an opportunity to consider one or more alternatives to the complete destruction of what is already there.

Charlie Quagliana, a Trustee of the Madison Trust for Historic Preservation with 40 years of experience as a Historic Preservation Architect, has written a position paper that examines an important aspect of some of the alternatives, entitled “FACADISM.”

The Advocacy Committee is interested in hearing your own perspectives on the range of available alternatives to complete demolition. What do you consider to be an acceptable middle-ground? Additional links are found at the end Charlie’s position paper and you are invited to share your thoughts by writing an email addressed to advocacy@madisonpreservation.org.

We also want to share a paper from PlaceEconomics. This paper (link below) outlines the YIMBY movement’s philosophy and makes the evidence-based case in response to the YIMBY attack on historic preservation.
